My new favorite great great grandmother.
What a tough life she seems to have navigated. With the help of JC, I’ve discovered so much about Julia within the last year.
Born in County Clare somewhere 1836
We first find her arriving on the 1855 Ravenscraig (above) from Plymouth March 10th to Geelong Melbourne arriving June 24th 1855.
There are 2 other McMahon single women from the same County Clare on the passenger list with the other two both called Margaret. Sister or cousin? She is listed as Judy on the ships list. We also see her as Johanna in other places.
On the ships list it says she can read but not write. Johanna is often used as the Latin equivalent for a lot of female J names including Julia. I have a feeling she may have been an Irish speaker and her birth name would have been Siobhan
She gave birth to my great grandfather George Peter Mackins (Rankin)(1861–1920)
10 Dec 1861 • Tumut, New South Wales
The father listed as George Rankin
It appears that Julia never married and we have found that she had more children to two other men.
