Punked

Woke up at six a little late again and instead of doing a pre-training ride I took the dogs for a walk. This was a better option all round.  They thought so at least.

Was about ten minutes late for the start and picked them up about 2km away coming towards me which wasn’t too bad. A bit of a head and a lot of side wind today and they were going pretty fast for a warm up. 2 got dropped as I was just joining them. I left them after trying to pull them back and then spent the next five minutes trying to get to the front bunch. When a few guys were starting to struggle we slowed down to keep us all happy. The 35kph into the wind went down to between 28 to 33kph till the break point.

Two groups today and the five guys who started the were a bit too young and fast for me so I opted for the easier second group. Due to the high grass and wind we agreed to only go as fast as 35kph till we passed the second bridge at about the 8km mark. This was to my liking. We got to this bridge and from the five starters we managed to shake of two. Then we picked up a straggler from the first group. Down to four and I took a pull at front for a bit. As I went back the pace picked up and a gap opened between the first two giys and the guy in front of me. He told me to go ahead but it was a bit too far already to bridge the gap. I dropped him.  Two guys ahead and nobody behind. I took note of the wind direction and the bends in the river. When the wind was going to help me I was going to put in extra effort, when it was going to hinder me I took a rest. The logical thing for many would be to do the opposite. I easily go over the heart rate limit into a strong wind so I’m better off waiting and biding my time. I kept my eye on the two above and could see there was not much team work happening between them. The straggles eventually gave up himself. 2km to go and I passed him. He didn’t jump on my back. 1km to go and I was making ground on #1. The good thing was the final 400m had a tailish wind. I put the pace up and just kept pushing as hard as I could. #1 probably thought he had this all wrapped up as he still had a handy lead with 400m to go. I got to him and passed him. He was not a happy little pedler. I could easily have given up and it was hard. A good feeling to remember to take into a race. You can’t win if you give up.

After training I went down river to Shibamata and then back home. With about 15km to go a guy passed me and we had a little bit of a race between us to Noda bridge. The headwind was strong. I paced myself well and with 5km to go caught up to him. He broke away again and I had to regain my momentum after a short hill. With 3km to go I was really picking up pace and bearing down on him. I had this in the bag too.

2km to go….BANG! back wheel punctured. Been over a year since I had one too. Hmmm not far to home….I’ll walk it. Hmmm this is hard walking with my cleats on….and I went to channge the tube. Being a very old tire it came off easily. My spare tubes had been in my spare back pocket zipper bag for over a year as well. I put it in and tried to inflate it. It seems to have developed a hole as well after a year of sweat and sun on it. I also wasted a air cyclinder on it. My next spare was a good one but as the tire was well worn I didn’t want to put in a new tube only to have to take the tyre off again when I get home and do it all again.

Another Semas rider caught up to me and we walked the last km together and had a chat.

I’ll probably put the Cosmic Carbons on until I get around to replacing the tyre and tube.
