On the third day…

His feet felt like lead. Actually I didn’t feel too bad tonight. I just went out there to hang on and improve my aerobic fitness. 44km. 7 riders. 10 sprints. I came 3rd in two but was not really out to go hard. Lantern rouge was the game plan and as I took a short cut on the 2nd last lap I earnt the reward.
Tomorrow off and I’d like to squeeze in 100km somehow. (Also have to grade 163 English tests.)

The spell checker here tells me earnt is not a word. Dictionary.com also tells me it doesn’t exist. This is a word I’ve used ever since I started earning money as a milk delivery boy. Further googling came up with this.

Verb
earnt
(British, rare) Simple past tense and past participle of earn.
[edit]Usage notes
This is an uncommon (<0.5% as common as earned in the British National Corpus) but entirely acceptable alternative form of the simple past and past participle earned. Still considered to be incorrect by many, who are largely unaware of the historical development of the English language. Other verbs which can be declined in this way are: learn (learnt), dream (dreamt), spell (spelt).

So I’m not completely stupid. Just as well I call myself an English teacher too.
