Garmin controlled the race all day. Looks like they had a big enough team with specialist riders that suited the course. The smaller teams couldn’t break free. The other big name teams didn’t have enough depth.
Was a nice 90 odd kilometer ride up in the morning. 6 a.m start and we went up the Edo River turned right onto the Tone river to Watarase. Then onto the left hand sided route 4 switching to whatever road would take us in a straight line to Kanuma. Loaded up the backpack with beers and food for the day, rode to the finish line, parked out bikes, walked up to the King Of The Mountain Peak and watched a few laps then back to the finish line for the finish
So may people there this year it was hard to get a front row peak. Had to resort to filming the big screen for the finish.
Brilliant ride by Daniel Martin of Ireland for Garmin. Broke away with well over a lap to go and rode as fast as the chasing peleton.
Not a course for Robbie McEwen and I think I saw him on one lap. But no idea how he went. The entire field looked much smaller than when I came 2 years ago. Wondering if there were many no starters or an early crash that took a lot out. Will try and find out.
