As soon as James left Dublin in 1878 wages skyrocketed. Looks like he should have stayed on a bit considering how hard he had it in Australia.
Dublin 1878
James left to look for Auckland in 1903 to find work leaving the family in Sydney.
After 19 months he died at the age of 45.
1904 Costley Home where James was listed on his death certificate records. 1904 The Chapel had to be used as a ward because of gross congestion. The Kitchen, laundry and boiler-house were built.
James in Melbourne probably late 20s.
James left a beautiful bread crumb on his shipslist showing his stepmother Honora. We never knew she existed.
We then found that James’ mum Rose Egan had died at the age of 41 April 1865 when James would have been 5 or 6. Father Thomas didn’t muck around and found his kids a new mother the following month. Honora Corcoran Dowling who must have been a widower as well.
