Watarase
January 23, 2010 | Leave a Comment
A nice slow ride to Watarase and some meandering on the way home to clock up just over 100km.
Very windy around the lake, even too windy for the windsurfers who were all there wondering whether to go out or not. Maybe it was just too cold. Plenty of people fishing though. By the looks of things, cycling was the best option. There were a few guys doing laps of the lake but two was enough for me.
Excellent place for cycling training with big wide roads with no cars. Just on 40km to get there from here which is enough to not want to do too much hard riding ince you’re there. Wanted to have lunch there too but went to a Family Mart back near Sekiyado castle.
Which was a good place for kite flying.
Looking over Watarase and into the Gunma mountains. (some snow on the top peaks)

Sprint Training 2010 #2
January 20, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Went for a 30km warm-up tonight to get the mileage up, the weight down and to make sure I was ready for the faster guys who came later. (who go full blast without a warm-up)
7 starters tonight: Looks like everybody is psyched up to come every week now and it was quite warm as well with a bit of a warm Southerly blowing.
Yet, they were still too fast from the start and after leading out the sprint for the 3rd lap I was struggling to hold on for the rest of the night and ended up taking the short route for 3 of the 10 laps.
Today’s mileage: 70km (did a few laps around the block on the way home to make it 70 exactly).
Yearly total: 616.52km
Daily average: 30.826km
Daily average goal: 33.71km

Today was a half day at the high school so came home to play with the dogs at lunch time a bit, have a beer for lunch and then ride to my night job.
At the start line there were three guys at the traffic lights coming back from further up the river. They looked like they were in race mode so I let them go in front of me. Little did they know that I just had a beer for lunch. After watching them falter clipping into their Shimano pedals I hit down on my Speedplay ‘click’ and I was away and around them all in the first 20m. Not wanting to be passed by them after that display of speed I put my foot on the pedal and bolted away for a nice 12km TT. Never saw them again. By the time I hit the roads at the end of the river I had certainly burnt off any traces of alcohol in the system and would have passed any doping test had the police requested one.
That gave me more time to get to work so took the next 8km at a snails pace!
Work done I bolted home as well.
Today’s mileage: 38km
Yearly total: 546.52km
Daily average: 28.764210526315789473684210526316km
Daily average goal: 33.71km
Average is dropping!! Wednesday night sprints tomorrow and another half day at work. I need to do a long slow warm up tomorrow night. (With my new shoe covers that arrived today). They look a bit bulky and heavy. Supposed to be warm tomorrow as well. (was warm today too with an unusual Southerly blowing up the river).

For dinner.

The prologue Cancer Council criteriums kicked off today in the 2010’s season opening stage race The Tour Down Under.
“It was just unbelievable,” said Henderson. “The lead out was just so fast, I don’t think I’ve ever been on anything faster and in the end my job was easy. What an incredible feeling.”

Today’s results will not effect the actual race but it was one for the sprinters to show who is the top dog and they obviously all want to get out and front for a win and keep away from the crashes behind them.

Cancer Classic Results:

Today, as usual running late for training after feeding the dogs so I did a little 5km warm up on the rollers before heading out into the cold. Some electrical tape repair work on my shoe covers kept my toes warm today. I ordered a new pair of shoe covers on amazon the other day but they are taking their time. They may even have to wait till next year before they get used. If tape can fix the Apollo 13 then it should be able to fix a lot of my old cycling gear. And all of my stuff is starting to look on the ‘it’s about to break’ side.
Joined up with the crew and had our break photo at Shinzakaya.

A lot of the super fast guys weren’t there today so I opted to go in the first group. I was dropped though at about the 4km mark after a second ’slow down’ section. I’m not very good at getting my momentum back after losing it more than once. Chasing all the light weight guys from a dead start really puts my heart rate over the limit.
Forgot to keep switching my garmin back on after stops today so the records may be a bit haywire. Will upload them in an hour or so.
After a cup of hot chocolate and a chai tea I was feeling raring to go and headed off to Tokyo Bay by myself to make sure I did over 100km today to get my daily average back to near where it should be.
Stop one, after following the Edo river all the way on the Western bank to Kasairinkai Park
When my brother came to see me the first time we were both in Japan together I took him here with my wife (then girlfriend). That was over 18 years ago now and it hasn’t changed all that much.
Was nice to smell the sea air.

Then across the bridge to Disneyland where I did a lap of both Disney Sea and Disneyland and then headed home up the other side of the river via Gyotoku.

A bit of a headwind on the way home just to make sure I was working out and not rolling along.
