Hakuba Creek House

This time last year we were up in Hakuba staying at my brother’s house. The snow had just started falling and for the next three days we were experiencing the heaviest snow storm to hit the area in over 20 years.

Since then I’ve been up and stayed about 6 or 7 times taking the dogs and my bikes up there whenever I had more than 4 days off.

This winter I don’t have the money to spend on tolls, ski lifts and all the rest that comes with skiing so waiting till early spring to go up there again. Even if I wanted to go up now, it is being rented out as a lodge to families and is almost booked out.

I love riding around all the hill climbs up there and am looking forward to going up there soon.
I may even take some people up in summer and do some kind of cycling tour.

Hakuba Hill Climb

Took the long weekend up to Hakuba with my son, dog & brother from Singapore. There is a nice hill climb from central Hakuba up the old route 406 towards Nagano. It’s only about 13km to the top from the house we stay in and there is about 8 or 9km of climbing involved to get to the top. I’ve now ridden this 3 times, the 1st being on my MTB then this last Sunday & Monday mornings.

Sunday I took my 23 toothed Mavic Cosmic carbon and struggled up with a low cadence averaging only 48rpm and it took me 35 minutes of climbing to get to the top. The next morning I changed wheels to my old Bontrager with a 25 toothed cog to help me a bit. Although my cadence average was much higher I could still only manage to get up in exactly the same time of 35 minutes.

4 days up in Hakuba Nagano. I took my 2 dogs a bbq and my MTB up to Hakuba for a few days while my students were doing their mid term tests. Had my first hill climb up Route 406 that is the old road from Hakuba over the mountains to Nagano city. Was easier than I thought it would be. Looking forward to doing it daily over the summer.

If you ever go to Hakuba, try and stay at Creek House. It’s my brother’s place.
