Gym (too much rain)

Having my 3rd long weekend in a row. School entrance exams tie up all the teachers with extra work so they cut a lot of days.  I am taking 3 students, a science teacher to a factory tomorrow that my father in-law organized for them to test some bio-diesel fuel they made out of pig lard.

Wednesday Night Sprint Training

6 riders. 10 laps.3 wins, 2 seconds, 1 3rd, and the rest I didn’t contest. Not bad for me. Felt good although still having problems keeping with the pack around the course. I think it must be some psychological thing and I need to work on sticking with the group no matter what. I manage to get back to them for the crucial sprint but that won’t work in a race. Got to stop letting gaps open up no matter how I feel.
Trying to upload my Polar data but for some reason the lap top is not recognizing the cable and can’t find the driver. I think my new Nortan Symantec Virus software that makes this thing run slower than my Windows 95 Aptiva has something to do with it. I have gone witjout virus software on this since 2003 and decided I better get some to make sure I had no problems. It found 2 spywares (harmless ones) and that’s all. Now my laptop is virtually useless and I hear it’s hard to uninstall the software. It’s like I’ve paid for this virus that is supposed to help me.
I have a feeling if I reboot with the cable plugged in it may pick up the driver but will wait till tomorrow to do that as booting up which used to take about a minute takes 10 now. Good one Mr. Norton.
Feeling really fit lately. The 96km ride on Tuesday afternoon helped. The running has helped. (Need to do more of that). The weekly weight sessions at the gym have toughened me up too. (Been upping the weights a bit). Peaking in the off season? Is that good or bad?Sprint training

96km

Finished work early around lunch time and met up with a friend at Abiko station and went for a roundabout ride.
From home, down the Edo river to the Tone-Unga canal. Followed that to Tone river to Abiko and up to the station. From the station we headed straight down to the Tega-Numa (swamp) lake and went counter clockwise around the lake and headed towards the the Tone river. My friend departed East to Narita and I ventured West and decided to explore a new way home. My Garmin though was missing the vital maps so I had to judge where I was and follow the sunset a bit till it got too dark. Once I hit route 6 near Toride I went up the Kokaiwa river to Moriya and it got very dark, then to Kokinu to route 3 which was a straight ride home. My Garmin maps kicked in though and I could easily get home in the end. Was hard keeping out of the way of traffic on the dark unlit country roads with trucks trying to get back from their shifts. Quite surprised how far I went. The Kokaiwa river was very nice and I may even go back again tomorrow to see it in daylight.

Here is the route as I remember it. Not sure of the roads around Moriya. Will double check that later form the Garmin which only recorded the last hour of the journey.

Here is the route.

Allan Davis Wins Tour Down Under

A story of determination. Allan has been in the TDU 11 times in a row. He had never won a stage there until this year and he won 3 of them this week. Enough time bonuses to keep my favorite Stuart O’Grady 25 seconds back in 2nd place. Lance Armstrong also using the race as his come back race made the event even more memorable.

Been following Lance on his twitter.com account too.

Walkies

Finding it hard to get out of bed on Sundays and I was late this morning for training. My two Airedales Lunar & Sora always want to go with me, so this morning I took them across the bridge to the halfway point for the Semas Cycling group and took a few photos with everybody. Almost did my back in with them pulling me every which way like Clydesdales.

After coming home and giving Lunar a bit of a haircut in the warm sun, I was feeling guilty about not having ridden much this month and got the bike out, got changed, camera in my pocket, i-pod in my ear and up to Sekiydao I went. I picked out a rider about 200m ahead and paced myself to catch him at the 11km bridge where the first set of traffic lights are.

After passing him on schedule I picked up the pace a bit and made sure nobody could pass me till I got to the castle. A hot can of chocolate then a few photos on both sides of the river. A short movie clip of a kayaker, then I headed East down the Tone river back home.

My bike posing in front of Sekiyado Castle at the end of the Edo river.

There is a tetropod factory opposite the castle.

Saturday (Today)
10km jog around Shimizu Kouen. Mostly following our Wednesday night cycling course but also off road onto some good MTB territory. Some of it I hadn’t seen before. I’ll be doing this course again. Lot’s of bird watchers hiding in the bamboo forests and walking paths of the main roads.
My legs didn’t feel great, probably due to the cold and I had to walk the last km home to make sure I didn’t do a calf muscle.
Nice hot bath when I got in and now replacing the lost energy with 2 cans of stout. Kirin.

Will our cycling club be able to get training in tomorrow morning before the snow gets thick. It was falling ever so lightly during my run but not heavy enough to even hit the ground. Powdery stuff. It was however snowing heavily on the other side of Tokyo.
If it is wet in the morning I’ll get on the roller for my fitness test.

Tour Down Under finishes tomorrow so may do a summary of that for you.

Sunday Semas

Was cold as usual and hard to get out of bed. Arrived about 5 minutes late and not wanting to cool down too much I decided to do the warm up by myself and headed off back up the river alone. I held them rest off till just before Noda brodge which was 13km. At the half way mark I didn’t take my usual break drink and just made do with my water bottle. I didn’t feel like going hard today after yesterday’s run. (legs still a bit sore plus a case of the trots this morning as well). The 2nd group had about 8 in it so was nice and easy after taking a big pull at the front and then just sitting at the back. My 2nd pull came up with about 1.5km to go and I didn’t want to rotate to the back as there were too many to pass again in the sprint. I made a small burst at a barrier crossing just to scare those behind me a little bit and let them know I had some gas left in the tank.
I then just kept the pace brisk and tried to keep my heart beat low. With about 500m to go somebody decided to make a break for it. I jumped on his wheel and let him do all the work. We managed to open a gap on everybody else and I just let him take me home. With about 60m to go I just put the accelerator down and skipped to the lead.  I always tend to do well on days I feel bad.

4 days in a row of exercise plus one to go tomorrow. Yes, another long weekend for me. Supposed to rain tomorrow though. To get my planned quota in for the weekend I need to ride another 20km for the 100 and run 10km for the 20.  Will see.

(Today’s Photos)

58km today.
Weight a.m: 84.5kg
Yearly tally:
230km cycling.
45.4km running.

Saturday Run

Just as I was about to go for my run today I noticed thatthe dogs had picked the lock to the front gate and gone for their walkies. My sons and I spent the next 45 minutes racing around on the shopping bikes looking for them. Luckily they had eaten no children, killed no cats or gotten run over. I hope they didn’t cause anybody any strife. That was worth about 5km of cycling mileage I reckon.

Then with ipod blasting, calves straining I set of down the river for a change to wards Nagareyama and at about the 4.5km mark crossed over the bridge and into Saitama. Followed the gold course and river back to Noda bridge and home again. I estimated by counting the km posts on the river that I did exactly 10km but according to this quick map my ride it was 9.6km

After being passed by a faster runner at abnout the 6km mark my racing instincts kicked in and I picked up the pace a bit. Got into a good rhythm and was going well. At least until my right calf muscle put on the brakes and told me to slow down again. Felt good. Nice and sunny, no cool breeze and nice views of golfers and the sun starting to set.

Hope I didn’t burn my legs out too much for tomorrow’s ride. I want to get in at least 100km tomorrow or my January mileage will be worse than last year and last year Jan was embarrassingly low.

Roller Training Fitness Test

I have a roller similar to this one here.

Got on the roller tonight; as for a long time I’ve only been using it to warm up at races. Having missed two night trainings this week due to a lack of members and cold I dusted off the cobwebs and put my new training plan to the test.
I’ve been thinking of ways to measure my fitness lately and this came to me as a possibility while I was at work today dreaming of my next ride.

As I can’t afford a power meter I want to improve my strength and be able to measure it with a ride. This was one idea.
Start at 25kph in an easy gear and every 5 minutes increase the speed by 5kph.
5 mins at over 25kph and under 30kph.
5 mins at over 30kph and under 35kph.
5 mins at over 35kph and under 40kph.
5 mins at over 40kph and under 45kph.
5 mins at over 45kph and under 50kph.
5 mins at over 50kph and under 55kph. (This is where it starts to get hard).
For each additinal minute from here I just increased speed by 1kph.
ie. 31st minute go above 56kph, 32nd minute 57kph etc…
It’s hard to exactly control the speed and I made a rule that if you go under the speed limits by even a fraction twice that is the end of the test. STOP. I tended to be riding at plus 2kph in the early parts and found I had to slow down to the minimum limit after about the 45kph stage.
Tonight’s first attempt results…
Distance: 22.27km
Average speed: 40.5kph
Max speed: 58kph
Time 32:56
I didn’t push myself too hard as I want to improve each time. Felt good and I didn’t worry about cadence but as the speed gets higher and the gears get heavier, the only way to survive is to go at a faster cadence. I think it works out well for cadence too as the starting pace is only warming up.
Next time I’ll use my Polar so I can see how the cadence changes and also max out my heart a bit more with a few extra minutes at the end. Especially in the latter stages of the work out. Looks like a good work out for the Saiko race too.
